What you are quoting comes from Evernote's Q&A / FAQ page here:

http://www.evernote.com/pub/ensupport/faq#n=6fa...

Their complete answer is:

"We can't guarantee that your notebook won't be indexed by Google. We won't link to that file, so it's extremely unlikely that Google will find it (unless it's linked to on an indexed site). We believe that the site won't be found because of the way Google crawls sites for its searches."

This, I believe, is an incomplete answer. It is trivial for a website to stop bots and crawlers from crawling their site - ie: with the 'no robots' command in the .htaccess (or comparable non-apache) file. I'd be enormously surprised if Evernote Notes are ever indexed by search engines.

...Dale

Re: Evernote Review – It Has Become an Integral Part of my Life

With regards to security, this is a big roadblock for me: "We can't guarantee that your notebook won't be indexed by Google."

What?!

Re: Evernote Review – It Has Become an Integral Part of my Life

The problem with addons like NoScript is that you cripple so much of the Internet. How do you expect Evernote to work without scripts? They need to automate functions on the client side. I don't think it would be possible for it to work in a browser without scripting languages.

...Dale

Re: Evernote Review – It Has Become an Integral Part of my Life

I just loaded Evernote and was pretty excited about the features. Unfortunately, it's not compatible with NoScript addon to Firefox V3 and higher. I love NoScript for additional surfing protection for scripts, addons, ad blocking, etc. However, Evernote injects a ton of third-party scripts to capture websites (like this blog entry!) which causes NoScript to continue reporting XSS attacks. Evernote admits the issue but recommends just disabling NoScript.

I am removing Evernote because NoScript's functionality is great. I wish Evernote would simply grab the URL without the over 100 lines of script requirements, because the concept is really great.

Re: Evernote Review – It Has Become an Integral Part of my Life

If you need secure notetaking solution for PC and iPhone, I would recommend looking at OneNote + MobileNoter (iPhone client).

Re: Evernote Review – It Has Become an Integral Part of my Life

I'm concerned about this too. Though I do use Google Apps Gmail to host my @daleisphere.com and @daledietrich.com email domains.

This same issue arises with any third party hosted email service which, as you point out, is quite common for small and even medium sized law firms.

I'm certainly re-thinking the idea of using the sync'ed method for client notes. I don't particularly want/need to access notes in the cloud. But I do want notes synced between my tablet, PC and iMac.

Ideally, Evernote would provide a service that does NOT include the cloud component for specific noteboks (for example, my client notebook of notes in Evernote) but would sync between devices would still work. Or, they could provide a service where notes online were encrypted like Dropbox does. But, who is to really know if they implement that in an effective way. Certainly their reputation would be adversely affected if anyone's data was ever found to be compromised. That should go some way to ensuring that they operate the system with integrity.

For now, they do offer the functionality that a notebook of notes would not be synced. That solves the hosted notes security issue but pretty much eliminates the reason I use Evernote - to sync hand written notes from my tablet with typed notes on other devices.

Lots to ponder here.

...Dale

Re: Evernote Review – It Has Become an Integral Part of my Life

As an attorney, I think I'd be concerned about client notes/files being stored on third party servers, even with passwords. Perhaps that's just paranoia on my part though. I'm also leery of using web e-mail for client communications, although some of my outside counsel sometimes use gmail to communicate with me (something I'm not that happy about).
